He sends his wife's regrets to Mr. Markham. She is too ill to keep her appointment, with Mr. Markham. She would have like to gone over the poems, before his trip to Boston. But she would like to reschedule the appointment, upon his return.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
